Water coming into your home or building goes through a water meter which measures the amount of water that passes through the meter and into your home or building. To check if you have a leak, first locate your home’s water supply shut off valve. Then turn off all water-using appliances and faucets and make sure no water is being used. After everything is shut off make note of the reading on your water meter. After at least 30 minutes check the reading on your water meter again. The reading should not have changed between the two readings. If the dial number wheels have moved then you have a leak either inside your home or on your line underground.

 

To determine if the leak is inside your home or underground turn off the home’s main water supply. If the indicator continues then there is an underground leak, if the indicator stops then the leak is inside your home.
